Quilt top should be trimmed and squared to the final finished size. We will not cut or trim your quilt top. We will trim the excess batting and backing once the quilting process is complete, at no extra charge. All remaining backing fabric that is trimmed off will be returned to you.
Trim all loose threads from quilt top and backing. Loose threads can get caught in the quilting process and the results would not be pretty.
Press both top and backing with the seams open or to one side.
Backing fabric MUST BE 8” longer and 8” wider than the quilt top. For instance, if your quilt measures 65” X 78”, your backing must measure 73” X 86”. In order for the machine to reach the absolute edge of the quilt top, I must have the additional clearance of 4” on all sides of the quilt. All selvage edges should be trimmed off the backing fabric. The selvage is woven much tighter than the fabric and if not trimmed off, the backing fabric will not lay flat.
If your quilt does not have an outside border, we highly recommend that you “stay stitch” slightly less than ¼” around the edge of your entire quilt to ensure that the seams do not pull apart. This stitching will be hidden once your binding is attached to the quilt.
Identify what you consider to be the top of your quilt and the top of the backing fabric with a safety pin and a note attached.
To ensure quality results, we strongly recommend that batting be purchased from us. We use Hobbs batting in an 80/20 blend, 100% poly batting, and wool. If you prefer double batting, we suggest pairing the Hobbs 80/20 batting with a poly batting for utility quilts, or wool for quilts designed for show or hanging. If you prefer to send your own batting, it must also be 8” longer and wider than the quilt top. Please understand that less expensive batting will produce a less polished product in the end.
Measure your quilt horizontally across the top, center, and bottom, and then vertically, left, center and right. All measurements should be approximately the same to ensure that puckers do not occur during the quilting process. Borders that do not lay flat will cause tucks, pleats, or fullness.
Shipping your quilt top should include the following:
